Our Physiotherapy Techniques

Physiotherapy may involve one or a combination of the following treatments:

Our physiotherapists use this hands-on technique to manipulate sore, painful, or stiff joints. Joint mobilisations activate mechanoreceptors in the joints to relax the surrounding muscles, alleviate stiffness, and restore full range of motion.

Soft Tissue Manipulation & Trigger Point Therapy Soft Tissue Manipulation & Trigger Point Therap

Soft Tissue Manipulation may involve the use of broad based massage techniques or specific muscle releases to stretch, loosen and relax the effected muscles, tendons or ligaments, improving blood flow, soothing pain, enhancing range of motion and energy levels. Trigger Point Therapy may also be used to release specific muscle knots that can refer pain or a steady dull ache to other areas of the body.

Frequently Asked Questions.

What should I expect?

Knowledge is key to ensuring a smooth and successful first physiotherapy session. Like any other doctor’s appointment, the first step will be for you to provide details of your medical history. Specifically, you’ll be asked to describe the pain, discomfort, or impairment you are experiencing as well as any particular incidents or injuries that may have caused it. The physiotherapist will also want to know what movements or activities have been hampered by your condition. To help guide the diagnosis and treatment, the physiotherapist may ask you about certain lifestyle factors, such as diet, activity level, occupation, and family medical history.

Next, the physiotherapist will examine the affected area and may ask you to perform certain movements to replicate symptoms or gauge your range of motion.

Based on your symptoms and the results of your examination, the physiotherapist will recommend a customized treatment plan. The initial treatment will most likely take place during your first appointment with follow-up sessions to ensure long-term results. We recommend scheduling the recommended physiotherapy treatments each week to promote fast healing.

Above all, Active Back Care is committed to making your first physiotherapy appointment a safe, comfortable, and nurturing experience. Your practitioner will spend as much time as necessary to address all of your questions and concerns so you leave our facility feeling better than when you arrived. Our staff is friendly, professional, and patient throughout the entire course of treatment.

What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy encompasses the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of injuries, disabilities, and other physical impairments. A widely accepted practice, physiotherapy uses a range of targeted therapeutic exercises to increase range of movement, reduce pain, and restore full functioning of the impaired area.

Do I need a referral from a doctor to be treated by a physiotherapist?

No. However, workers’ compensation or third party insurance companies may require a referral before approving coverage of your physiotherapy fees.

Do insurance companies cover physiotherapy?

Many health insurance companies do approve reimbursement for physiotherapy fees. We recommend that you check with your provider before seeking physiotherapy to determine whether you have coverage, what fees are covered, and whether any deductibles apply.

What should I expect from my first visit with a physiotherapist?

During your first session, your physiotherapist will begin by discussing your medical history, current physical condition, areas of concern, and your goals for your therapy. He or she will then conduct a physical examination of the affected area. If necessary, tests will be performed to obtain a diagnosis and treatment plan.

How many sessions will I need before I experience the desired results?

Everybody is different but, in most cases, minor to moderate pain will generally respond with notable relief in one to four sessions. Rehabilitation may take longer when injuries are severe or long-standing, or the patient’s lifestyle is not conducive to proper healing, or the afflictions are caused by a serious disease, trauma, or neurological impairment. Even when positive results are experienced, that doesn’t mean treatment should be stopped, as each physiotherapy session builds upon the progress of the previous one.

How is massage therapy combined with physiotherapy?

At Active Back Care, we believe that physiotherapy is most effective when paired with massage therapy. While physiotherapy focuses on joints and musculoskeletal components, massage therapy helps to reduce strain and tension of the muscles. Massage can increase the effectiveness of physiotherapy by reducing swelling, tightness, and scar tissue around the injured area.
