Dr. Rod Weiland (Chiropractor), Founder & Clinical Director
Rod is a chiropractor, business owner, employer, and family man who has dedicated his life to the pursuit of excellence. As one of two clinical directors of Active Back Care, he is devoted to providing the best in natural health care solutions and to serving patients’ needs in every regard.
After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of New South Wales in 1988, Rod earned a Masters degree in Chiropractic at Macquarie University in 1990. Upon graduating, he opened his first clinic in Chatswood, emphasizing clinical excellence, customer service, community involvement, and empowering staff training.
With a wealth of experience and advanced training in industrial injury prevention, occupational health, and ergonomics, Rod works to create an environment that is conducive to the well-being of therapists and clients alike. He believes that each patient presents his or her own unique needs that must be met with creativity, insight, and compassion.
Rod is a devoted family man; he and his wife, Cherine Weiland, have two children. Along with Cherine, he served as Convener of the NSW branch of the Spinal Research Foundation for several years, encouraging continuing education of students, new graduates, and experienced practitioners in chiropractic disciplines. Rod also has many years of experience providing free weekly spinal care classes for patients, injury prevention programmes for local businesses, back care lectures, and informational sessions about chiropractic care and wellness.
Dr. Cherine Weiland (Chiropractor), Founder & Clinical Director
With a background in chiropractic science, Cherine has a passion to promote health and well-being by optimizing spinal biomechanics and neurological function. After graduating from the University of New South Wales with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1988, Cherine earned her Masters degree in Chiropractic at Macquarie University in 1990. Early in her career, she developed an interest in identifying and addressing structural dysfunctions that can lead to chronic back pain conditions. By performing gentle spinal adjustments and prescribing active spinal rehabilitation exercises, Cherine was successful in relieving mechanical back and neck pain symptoms and improving spinal strength. Further postgraduate studies in neurology enhanced her ability to address more complicated spinal and neurological conditions, such as various headache, migraine, and benign vertigo symptoms.
After having children of her own, Cherine expanded her interest to providing safe and effective prenatal, postnatal, and pediatric care. Cherine is a member of the Chiropractors Association of Australia, the Chiropractors & Osteopathic College of Australia, and the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association.
As a clinical director of Active Back Care, Cherine manages the in-house training for all of the massage therapists and support staff, empowering the spirit of excellence that drives our clinic.
Dr. Van Dinh, (Chiropractor), Associate Chiropractor
A valued member of the Active Back Care team, Ms. Van Dinh has a passion for helping patients who are suffering from chronic pain caused by spinal issues. Van specializes in a practice correction technique called Advance Biostructural Correction (ABC), which is highly effective in correcting postural distortions and maintaining proper posture. She has used ABC to treat patients of all ages and conditions, including young students. Demonstrating a strong work ethic and meticulous attention to detail, Van provides effective and thorough treatment for each patient.
A graduate of Macquarie University, Van holds a Bachelor and Master of Chiropractic Science. Before joining Active Back Care, she gained experience working with several practices in the Sydney area. When she’s not working, she enjoys cooking and cuisine.
Dr. Michelle Parsons, (Chiropractor), Associate Chiropractor
As a local Hills resident, Michelle Parsons is passionate about helping patients throughout the community to achieve their wellness goals and enjoy functional, mobile lives. She completed her Bachelor of Chiropractic Science in 2013 and her Master of Chiropractic in 2015 at Macquarie University in Sydney, where she was also a chiropractic skills tutor of first-year students. Michelle’s recent education provided her with the most current knowledge of industry techniques, technologies and research, enabling her to provide patients with the highest quality of care.
Michelle’s areas of interest include headaches and migraines, neck pain, mid and low back pain, sciatica, postural and developmental conditions, preventative care and sports injuries. She uses a wide variety of techniques and an evidence-based approach to diagnose and treat patients, specifically tailoring each treatment plan to ensure patient comfort while achieving optimal results.
Outside of the office, Michelle enjoys hiking, DIY home projects, farm management, equestrian activities and animal biomechanics.
Dr. David Huang, (Chiropractor), Associate Chiropractor
Active Back Care is pleased to welcome David Huang to our family of chiropractic professionals. As a former competitive athlete, David brings personal insights and firsthand experience to our practice. Currently the senior chiropractor for the Manly Warringah AFL team, he works directly with team athletes to prevent injury and maximize their health and performance.
David completed his Bachelor of Chiropractic Science and Master of Chiropractic at Macquaire University. As a chiropractor, he has a specialized focus in restoring and optimizing neuro-musculoskeletal health in the spine and peripheral joints. He is also highly skilled in biomechanics, utilizing the latest chiropractic and physical therapy modalities. In addition, David has experience using dry needling to alleviate both acute and chronic pain. He regularly attends seminars to stay up to date with cutting-edge techniques and technologies.
With his strong work ethic and passion for helping patients, David is a strong asset to the Active Back Care team.
Michael Brierley, Physiotherapist
Michael joined the Active Back Care team in 2007 with a main interest in musculoskeletal and sports physiotherapy. He had previously spent years working in the public hospital system, focusing primarily on rehabilitation and post-operative hip and knee surgeries.
Michael is the club physiotherapist for Blacktown Magic AFL club and assistant to the Brisbane Lions AFL club. He tours as the NSW and Australian physiotherapist for Indoor Netball Australia and Men’s and Mixed Netball Australia. Michael also works with the Sydney Ice Dogs, as well as many local soccer, basketball, touch football, and rugby sports teams. He enjoys the challenges of helping long distance runners, cyclists, triathletes, dancers, and cheerleaders to maximize their athletic performance.
Michael earned his Bachelor of Applied Science in Physiotherapy from the University of Sydney. To expand his expertise, he is currently pursuing his Masters of Sports Physiotherapy through LaTrobe University. Michael has received extensive training in multiple forms of physiotherapy, including the Maitland, Mulligan, and McKenzie methods, as well as ENAR electrotherapy and dry needling. As an accredited Work Cover, DVA, and CTP physiotherapist, he spent 12 months volunteering on the Thailand/Myanmar border, where he trained local physiotherapists in rehabilitation techniques.
Michael’s diverse treatments involve a combination of ENAR electrotherapy, deep-tissue massage, dry needling, mobilisations, and manipulations, Shockwave therapy, Game Ready cryotherapy, diagnostic ultrasound, kinesiotaping, and evidence-based home exercise and stretching programs. He gets great satisfaction from helping people regain their strength, adopt healthy lifestyles, and resume their favourite activities. He strives to provide each patient with personalized, one-on-one care.
Valerie Chan, Physiotherapist
Valerie Chan brings a unique mix of competence and compassion to the Active Back Care physiotherapy team. She earned dual degrees (Bachelor or Health Sciences and Bachelor of Arts with double major in Psychology and Japanese) from the University of Auckland, New Zealand in 2010. Valerie had the unique opportunity to study abroad at Tokyo University in Japan, and was also awarded the coveted Heiwa Nakajima Scholarship. Most recently, she earned her Physiotherapy qualifications from Macquarie University in 2016, and is currently pursuing her Dry Needling Certificate.
With a special interest in sports medicine, Valerie has served as the sports trainer and physiotherapist for the Sydney Bears Ice Hockey organization for the past two seasons. She is also the physiotherapy assistant for the Gordon Rugby Club.
Before pursuing her passion for physiotherapy, Valerie spent several years in Hong Kong, where she worked for Morgan Stanley as a Desktop Publishing Specialist and Business Development Officer. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, running, paddling and exploring Sydney. Valerie is multilingual in English, Cantonese, Mandarin and Japanese, and enjoys communicating with her patients throughout the entire treatment process. She looks forward to continuing to further her clinical skills and mastering new techniques.
Arville Clores, Physiotherapist
Arville Clores lends a strong expertise and education to the Active Back Care team. After earning his Bachelor of Health Sciences in 2013 from USYD, Arville went on to receive his Masters of Physiotherapy in 2015. As a practicing physiotherapist, his areas of focus include sports injuries and rehabilitation, post-operative care and treatment of headaches and migraines. When not treating his patients, Arville enjoys playing basketball and improving his own fitness.
Melissa Jerrow, Massage Therapist
Melissa Jerrow has been a valued member of the Active Back Care family for more than 10 years. After graduating with a Diploma of Health Science in 2003, she pursued training in massage therapy and soon joined our team. Melissa takes part in annual health and well-being conferences to keep her skills sharp and to offer optimal client care. In her down time, Melissa enjoys reading, crafting, and cooking. She has a primary interest in pregnancy massage, sports massage, deep tissue massage, and trigger point release.
Andres Salazar, Massage Therapist
Andres Salazar brings his skills and experience to Active Back Care, where he uses massage therapy techniques to help reduce pain, tension, and stiffness in our patients. He previously worked at Tafe in Meadowbank, where he focused on remedial massage. Andres attended the University of Valle, where he earned his Physical Education degree with an emphasis on aquatic instruction, physical therapy and fitness, and massage therapy. His areas of interest include muscle correction, posture analysis, relaxation, sports injuries, and treating children and seniors. When he’s not working, Andres enjoys swimming, training his children in swimming and athletics, and woodworking.
Delfina Diaz, Massage Therapist
Active Back Care is pleased to welcome Delfina Diaz to our massage therapy division. She previously worked with the Sydney Kings as a massage therapist. Delfina holds her Certificate III in fitness, and has a primary interest in remedial massage, pregnancy massage, sports injuries, and myofascial release. She enjoys treating children and teens, and loves forming new relationships with her patients and helping them live comfortable, pain-free lives through massage therapy. Delfina earned her Remedial Massage degree from Tafe in 2003. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, knitting, crafting, and spending time with her children.
Michelle Mahony, Head Receptionist
As the head receptionist of our facility, Michelle is responsible for greeting patients, processing records, and ensuring smooth day-to-day operations. After her previous career in banking, she came to Active Back Care six years ago, quickly proving herself as an invaluable resource.
Michelle’s favorite part of the job is making new patients feel comfortable and witnessing the happy results of successful treatments. Considering her co-workers to be like family, she infuses the office with her cheerful, caring attitude. With two teenage children who are very active in basketball, Michelle has been managing representative teams in her spare time for over a decade.
Jennifer Cadzow, Receptionist
After several years working as a personal assistant with large corporate organisations, Jennifer took some time off to raise her new daughter. She recently decided to return to the workforce with a part-time position at Active Back Care. She has found the job to be fulfilling, flexible, and perfectly suited to her lifestyle as a busy wife and mother.
Jennifer enjoys being part of the small, family-oriented team at Active Back Care, thriving on the busy office environment and daily personal interactions with patients. She strives to always greet patients with kindness and sensitivity. In her spare time, Jennifer enjoys playing competitive netball, walking, pursuing outdoor activities, and spending time with her young daughter.
Shelley Forwood, Receptionist
Active Back Care is pleased to introduce the new face of our practice, receptionist Shelley Forwood. Before joining our team, Shelley worked as an administrative professional in the insurance brokerage industry and also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of an energy company. She has also owned her own café, where she juggled a myriad of management and operational tasks. Shelley’s diverse experience and attention to detail make her a valuable asset to our practice.
When she’s not in the office, Shelley enjoys spending time with her husband of 43 years, her three adult children and her four granddaughters. A self-described “people person,” she enjoys expanding her network of contacts and entertaining family and friends. We’re confident that our patients will enjoy Shelley’s pleasant, welcoming demeanour and efficient operational skills.
